Read below for a full description of upcoming Upward Bound sponsored activities. Each activity will require either a permission slip or application and is offered Upward Bound students who are in good academic standing with their high school and Upward Bound coursework. Please see the description for links to those required documents. NEW ENGLAND STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE September 27th-29th, 2018
Each fall we have the privilege of bringing a small group of students to the NESLC in Fairlee, Vermont hosted at the Hulbert Outdoor Center. High School students from all over New England and involved in TRIO, from programs such as Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math and Science, Gear Up, and Talent Search will come together to focus on leadership development, risk-taking, and problem-solving through a series of workshops. Transportation will be available from the NVU-J campus. Applications will be available during the upcoming summer program.
THE MAGIC OF STEM EXPERIENCE February & Summer 2019 Specific Dates: TBD
This is an exciting new initiative being offered by NVU-J Upward Bound were students interested in STEM will have the opportunity to delve into hands-on technology projects with real-life applications. Involvement will not only include taking a course during the 2020 summer program but engaging in a week-long workshop during February 2020. Pre-trip meetings will be required for all those who are selected. Apply today!
DARTMOUTH SCIENTIST FOR A DAY Dates TBD
This winter a small group of students will be invited to become "Scientists For A Day". Upward Bound programs from Vermont, New Hampshire and New York will come together for a day of hands-on STEM based projects and learning guided my a Dartmouth professor. The day will also include a tour and lunch on the Dartmouth campus. Transportation will be provided from the NVU-J campus.
JUNIOR RETREAT EVENT TO MASSECHUSETTES February 19th-21st, 2020
Each year National Trio day serves as a retreat for our high school juniors to network with other Upward Bound students, tour colleges, participate in workshops and more. We hope that all of our current juniors will join us as this is a trip you will not want to miss! This year we will be headed to Massachusetts for the event.
GREEN MOUNTAIN SCHOLARS BOWL March 1st-2nd, 2019
Join us at the 16th Annual Green Mountain Scholars Bowl. This friendly challenge will take place on the University of Vermont campus on March 2nd, 2019. NVU-J will depend on our past victories but the competition from Keene State College, Castleton University, Adirondack Community College, SUNY Plattsburgh, NVU-Lyndon, and the University of Vermont will be tough! The day will also include lunch on campus and a campus tour at UVM which will precede the competition and fabulous prizes will be awarded! Transportation will be available from the NVU-J campus.
STEM SUMMIT Dates TBD
This summit will bring together Upward Bound programs from all over Vermont and upstate New York to establish a day for exploring STEM careers and empowerment through these fields. A day of hands on learning and workshops from skilled professors. Transportation will be available from the NVU-J campus.
JFK LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE April 15th-16th, 2020 (Applications Due March 29th, 2019)
Students selected to participate in this unique learning opportunity will receive an amazing hands-on experience, develop new leadership skills, and travel to Boston. This is truly a wonderful learning opportunity designed to help each participant build their resume while engaging in an intensive leadership building activity. Slots are limited so please complete this application in a thoughtful and thorough manner. The JFK Leadership Conference is a unique conference that is available to you through your participation in Upward Bound. The conference brings together TRIO students from all over New England for a day filled with workshops, a tour of the JFK Presidential Library & Museum and inspirational guest speakers. Transportation from NVU-J will be provided.
